Fredeburger Schiefer®:
Natural stone from Germany
From the depths of time: MAGOG’s Fredeburger Schiefer® was formed more than 400 million years ago in the Rhenish Slate Mountains. A durable and sustainable natural stone – designed for architecture with a future.
Fredeburger Schiefer®
Quality with a future
For us, Fredeburger Schiefer® is more than just a natural stone. It stands for regional origin, genuine craftsmanship and sustainable production. In our own slate quarries, we extract the slate underground, right where it was formed millions of years ago. Our mining area is situated in the Rhenish Slate Mountains and is one of the largest and most significant slate deposits in Germany.
It is its distinctive, dense texture that makes Fredeburger Schiefer® so unique. The vibrancy of its slate colour is another distinctive feature. Slate is a true treasure of nature – and the foundation upon which we at MAGOG have been building with pride and a sense of responsibility for over 165 years.
Applications of Fredeburger Schiefer®
As versatile as its structure
Why choose Fredeburger
Schiefer® from MAGOG?
Large formats thanks to a special structure
Fredeburger Schiefer® is characterised by a particularly dense, uniform texture. It is precisely this structure that enables us to cut exceptionally large formats from the blocks, which create a very special effect in the design. The result is surfaces with clean lines, fewer visible joints and a presence that visibly enhances the architecture.
Suitable for roofs, facades and interiors
We use our Fredeburger Schiefer® not only for roofs and facades but also for high-quality interior applications, such as on walls, as flooring or for staircases. The slate from Bad Fredeburg creates a harmonious overall look that seamlessly combines material, function and design.
A durable
natural material
Fredeburger Schiefer® is a natural material that lasts for many decades. Its dense structure ensures that it remains robust and performs reliably both in everyday use and under demanding conditions. This results in surfaces that not only look good but also retain their value over the long term – both indoors and outdoors.
Local production and processing
We source our Fredeburger Schiefer® locally from our own slate quarries in Bad Fredeburg and process it nearby. Local mining is more than just a tradition: it ensures consistent quality and makes slate extraction transparent. This ensures that the origin, characteristics and every detail of the manufacturing process can be traced at all times. For you, this means: natural stone sourced from the region, precision-crafted and reliably delivered.
Certified
quality
Every slate slab from MAGOG is a testament to certified quality, which is based on applicable standards and recognised testing procedures. We provide documented records of the relevant technical data and supporting evidence so that planning, tendering and execution can be carried out on a reliable basis. This way, you’ll know right from the start what properties the slate has, enabling you to work with it safely and precisely.
Fredeburger Schiefer® by MAGOG:
Large slate slabs, greater design flexibility
Smooth surfaces, fewer joints • Clean, crisp lines in the design • A spacious look on façades • Greater freedom to meet the highest standards
Our Fredeburger Schiefer® can be cut into particularly striking sizes. This is because its stable structure makes it possible to extract large slabs of slate from the rock. Visually, this creates a smooth, uncluttered surface with fewer interruptions. The tiling pattern is significantly reduced, and the overall effect is spacious and elegant. In terms of planning and design, this means: fewer grids, precise lines, clear details and a design that deliberately emphasises the architecture.
On request, we can also manufacture the slate slabs to your exact specifications for your property. This makes MAGOG slate a building material of choice, particularly when it comes to modern architecture. The large slate slabs, whether laid in squares, portrait or landscape formats, create high-quality façades characterised by a unique clarity and clean lines. .
MAGOG Mining: Slate from
Bad Fredeburg
Top-quality German slate: we are uncovering a treasure.
Underground extraction of Fredeburger Schiefer®
German slate from Bad Fredeburg.
In our own slate quarry, we extract Fredeburger Schiefer® underground at a depth of around 80 to 120 metres. Our slate deposit stretches for around 8 kilometres in length and approximately 1 kilometre in width. Here in Bad Fredeburg, we extract the blocks directly from the natural rock and then carefully examine them above ground. This creates a reliable foundation for further processing and ensures predictable results within the project.
Production and processing stages
Traditional craftsmanship meets modern machinery.
From the raw block to the finished slate slab, our production process follows a clear sequence of steps: sawing, splitting, cutting and precision finishing. Many of the steps involved are deliberately carried out by hand by true professionals who assess the stone, guide it and work it with precision. Depending on the intended use, the slate is then automatically split to a thickness of around 5 mm, ensuring uniform sizes, clean edges and reliable results.
Focus on precision and quality assurance
At MAGOG, precision begins with the material and only ends with the finished product.
At MAGOG, precision begins with the material and only ends with the finished product. With over 165 years’ experience, state-of-the-art technology and the trained eye of our professionals, we ensure consistent thicknesses, precise cuts and clean edges. At MAGOG, we combine time-honoured craftsmanship with a clear vision for the future, and always deliver products of consistent quality. Certificates and documentation attest to the quality of each individual slate slab.
Sustainable building with
slate
At MAGOG, we view sustainability as a measurable achievement: slate stands out for its long service life and its excellent environmental performance, with comparatively low emission levels when compared with other building materials. Fredeburger Schiefer® is manufactured on our site, with short transport distances and low energy consumption. Slate is a valuable natural building material to which no other materials are added during production. Only the mine’s own water is used in the production of Fredeburger Schiefer®.
Fredeburger Schiefer®:
Certified quality
Test reports and certificates are essential in day-to-day construction work: they make the properties of the material measurable, comparable and documentable. We are providing you with these documents as a single package so that you can use reliable information in your planning.
Specifically, at MAGOG this includes, for example, certificates of conformity and tests for slate in accordance with DIN EN 12326-1 (roof and external wall cladding), as well as additional tests for natural stone, such as those relating to water absorption, flexural strength and compressive strength, frost resistance and slip resistance.
Frequently asked questions about Fredeburger Schiefer®
In Germany, slate is found primarily in the Rhenish Slate Mountains (Hochsauerland in Bad Fredeburg, the Eifel and the Hunsrück), in the Harz Mountains and in the Thuringian Slate Mountains.
No, slate is a safe natural stone.
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock consisting primarily of mica minerals (such as sericite), quartz and clay minerals, and which has acquired its characteristic cleavage as a result of high pressure.
If properly installed and maintained, a slate roof can easily outlast the house beneath it.
High-quality slate comes from Germany, Spain and Wales, amongst other places. The key factors are the long-term experience and the suitability of the slate slabs.
