MAGOG SLATE:
Tradition meets technology

MAGOG is one of Germany’s oldest slate manufacturers. As a family-run business, we have had deep roots in Fredeburg in the Sauerland region for over 160 years, with our own slate quarry there. MAGOG has always stood for quality, reliability and the responsible use of natural stone.

For us, sustainability means combining the tradition of slate with innovation: from classic slate facades right through to integrated PV mounting systems for slate roofs and more. Our expertise is rooted in time-honoured values, sustainability and a genuine passion for slate and craftsmanship. This is how we build trust that generations can rely on.

MAGOG slate:
Sustainable from quarrying to the facade

Slate stands out for its impressively long service life and is one of the building materials with the lowest CO₂ and SO₂ emissions. Fredeburger Schiefer® is quarried directly on our site, with short transport distances, low energy consumption and minimal use of raw materials. In our slate quarry, we use modern underground methods that rely solely on quarry water. No further materials are added during the production process. This is how we offer durable slate solutions that impress today whilst also taking responsibility for future generations.

Frequently asked questions about
slate and solar panels

Is slate suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, slate is ideal for outdoor use. Whether it’s a slate façade, a slate roof, slate shingles or large-format slate slabs – this natural stone is frost-resistant, resistant to UV discoloration, weather-resistant and retains its shape for decades. Modern solutions such as slate veneer or thin slate are also suitable for a wide range of outdoor applications.

Where is slate still quarried today?

Slate is quarried in Europe, primarily in Germany, Spain and Portugal. The Sauerland region in Germany – including our own slate quarry in Fredeburg – is one of the key areas. Our slate from Fredeburg is renowned for its unique texture and high quality.

What is thin slate?

Thin slate is an ultra-light form of natural stone in which a thin layer of slate is applied to a flexible backing material. This produces thin slabs of genuine slate for bonding. They are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Thin slate combines the look of natural stone with maximum design flexibility.

How does MAGOG Solar® Premium work?

MAGOG Solar® Premium is an in-roof photovoltaic system in which the solar modules are mounted directly onto the roof structure. The modules replace the traditional roof covering – whether it be a tiled or slate roof – and blend flush and aesthetically into the roof surface. Our in-roof PV mounting systems are durable, low-maintenance and compatible with modern PV modules, ensuring that energy generation and design work in perfect harmony.

What is an integrated PV system?

An integrated PV system, also known as roof-integrated photovoltaics or in-roof PV, replaces traditional roofing whilst also providing protection against the elements. The modules are installed directly onto the roof truss and form a continuous, rainproof surface. The result is a smooth, architecturally sophisticated roof that generates energy efficiently and can be combined perfectly with slate and other roofing materials.
